The game is definitely more challenging on the easiest setting than most games these days are on higher difficulty settings. It's not "Darksouls hard" though, at least not on the easiest difficulty level. If I had to a rate in on a scale from 1-10* the "normal" difficulty would be a 7 and "nightmare hardcore" (permadeath) would be a 9.
